Representing some of the finest storytelling in the Tanakh, the closing chapters of Genesis mark a literary transition from the ancestral cycles to the Exodus narrative, centered on the figure of Joseph and anticipating the movement of the Israelites into Egypt. This class will survey the narrative arc of these chapters, discuss their editorial character, and explore their core themes. We’ll pay particular attention to the text’s techniques of characterization and its use of keywords and verbal roots to develop complex thematic structures.
