Shabbat Shalom from Russia!
Shabbat Shalom from Moscow!
By Rabbi Charlie Savenor
In February 2018 travelers from PAS will study the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s through the lens of Jewish values. What began in the South with the heroism of Rosa Parks became a national struggle that touched every corner of our nation and reached the highest echelons of government.
During this unforgettable journey, we will visit the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA, where Dr. Martin Luther King shared his vision for equality; learn about Rosa Park’s heroism in Montgomery, AL; and retrace the steps of Dr. King and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel at the Civil Rights March in Selma. In Birmingham, AL, we will visit the hallowed ground where four girls were killed in a church bombing. In one of the first places where the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) fought bigotry, we will hear about southern Jewish life and meet activists who shaped our country’s history. As important as what we see and hear, we will interpret what we learn of the past to prepare ourselves to engage with contemporary challenges facing our nation.
Led by Rabbi Neil Zuckerman, Rabbi Charlie Savenor, and Hallie Chandler and co-chaired by Linda Yarden and Barry Frankel, this experience is for adult learners as well as parents with their teens. Participants will travel independently to Atlanta to meet the group for programming beginning on Sunday morning, February 18 and continuing through Tuesday afternoon, February 20. Read a draft of the itinerary.
In the words of Coretta Scott King, echoing the words of the Passover Seder, “Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it in every generation.” We invite you to delve into this Civil Rights Journey so that the messages of courage, hope, and freedom will be passed from one generation to another.
Join us for an informational meeting at PAS on Tuesday, June 27 from 6:00–6:45 pm. We will discuss the current program for the trip and answer questions. To RSVP for the meeting, please email hvaughn@pasyn.org.
