In this week’s parashah, the favorite prayer Mah Tovu is born, and from an unusual source: the gentile prophet Balaam. Thinking about the tents of Jacob, we recall that the verses of Mah Tovu are emblazoned on walls all over the PAS campus, recognizing different periods of our history – the original 87th St sanctuary, the new building that was added to it, facing Madison Avenue, and Eli M. Black Lifelong Learning Center. This music from the rededication service in December 2019 also combines old and new settings of the prayer. It seems fitting as we open our building for worship again, as we rededicated ourselves at every stage of the synagogue’s journey.
