Sisters and sisterhood receive limited attention in the grand narratives of the Tanakh and related scholarship. However, in examining solidarity among women – and when they play to and against type – it becomes impossible to deny their vital role in the patriarchal societies described in the Tanakh. Using Amy Kalmanofsky’s Dangerous Sisters of the Hebrew Bible as our guide, we will explore how women act as destabilizing figures in narratives where family crisis, property, patrimony, and community boundaries are at risk. This class is student led, with different members taking the lead each week.
