Shabbat, Music

We are getting ready for the High Holidays together, in ways we all recognize and also in ways that are special to each of us. This prayer, the chazzan’s personal prayer of approach, is always a high moment above many.

This setting, originally chanted by Cantor Moishe Oysher in the mid-20th century, is offered here in a newly commissioned arrangement for Cantor Schwartz and solo violin. Oysher’s career was remarkable and surprising: born in Bessarabia in days of the Russian Empire, he appeared in Yiddish theater from Winnipeg to the Lower East Side, served congregations in Manhattan, and passed in New Rochelle, having covered the world in song from the stage to the bimah. Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom.
