The Park Avenue Synagogue archives – which contain more than 100 years of historical records – have been catalogued by the archivists at the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary and are now housed permanently at JTS. This collaboration between our institutions allows the history of PAS to be preserved and accessed by congregants, clergy, scholars, and students. In the first session of this two-part series, PAS Archives Committee members and the JTS team will present the basics of organizing and accessing the PAS archives. They will illustrate the collection’s richness through the lens of justice and equality, highlighting our Bulletins and pointing to significant historical moments marked at PAS. Topics will include World War II efforts, the establishment of the State of Israel, the efforts to free Soviet Jewry, the civil rights movement, and LGBTQ issues in Judaism.
