Music

This year marks ten years since the passing of Debbie Friedman (1951–2011), one of the most influential and inspirational Jewish singer-songwriters in America. Friedman had a particular gift of bringing the timeless lessons of the Torah into a modern, human, and accessible language. In the case of this song, God’s words to Abraham, Lekhi l’kha . . . v’heye b’rakha (“Go forth . . . and you shall be a blessing”) from this week’s parashah (Genesis 12:1-17:27) apply to all of us: leave that which is familiar and trust that blessings await us on our journeys. We often sing this song to people who are starting a new chapter in their lives. By blessing each other, we carry an Abrahamic promise of protection as we go on our way.
