This week, Cantor Azi Schwartz treats you to two renditions of “El Eliyahu”, a piyyut (liturgical poem) for Havdalah attributed to Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra (1089-1164), one of the last great poets of the Spanish “Golden Age” of Hebrew poetry. The first is a Traditional Iraqi melody and the second is Traditional Indian. The piyyut is concerned with the coming of Elijah the Prophet to announce the ultimate redemption. Both renditions will be available on “Havdalah,” a new album from Park Avenue Synagogue coming this fall.
