PAS Civil Rights Trip to the South 2026

Learn about pivotal moments in America’s struggle for racial equality by exploring key sites on the Civil Rights trail through the South. Participants will trace this movement from the past through the contemporary issues still at play and will study the role of Jewish communities in the story.

About the Trip

When is the trip?
It will begin in Atlanta, Georgia on the morning of Monday, Feb. 9 and end on the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 11. Participants must arrive at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport by 10 am on Feb 9. Participants should plan to leave after 7 pm from Atlanta on Feb. 11.
What will we be doing?
We will tour historically significant sites in the civil-rights movement in Atlanta, Birmingham, Selma, and Montgomery. We will learn about pivotal moments in the struggle for racial equality. We will trace this movement from the past through the contemporary issues still at play. We will also study the role of Jewish communities in the story, hearing about people who fought for their rights to be treated like everyone else, and learn about advocacy through a Jewish lens. We will also visit the Equal Justice Initiative’s National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which is devoted to victims of lynchings, and the Legacy Museum, which explores the evolution of racial oppression from slavery to mass incarceration.

It is for adult members of Park Avenue Synagogue.

How do I register for the trip?

Registration will open on September 10. Registration will close on October 24.

What is the cost of the trip?

It is $1,825.00 per person for a double room or $2,075.00 per person for a single room.

This cost does not include airfare.

When is final payment due?

It is due upon registration.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations on and before October 24 are fully refundable. Cancellations after October 24 are non-refundable.
Who is our travel partner?

We are partnering with Etgar 36.

Will we be flying together?

We will not be flying as a group. You should plan to meet the group at Atlanta International Airport by 10 am on Mon., Feb. 9.

Which member of the clergy will lead this trip?

Rabbi Lori Koffman and Rabbi Shayna Zauzmer will be leading this trip.

What are accessibility considerations for this trip?

The longest walk is across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. It is a ¼ mile. The bus will go across the bridge, and you can ride rather than walk. Most of the other walking is in museums, which have wheelchairs for those that need. We can accommodate scooters under the bus, and the steps on the bus kneel. We can also arrange for a bus with a wheelchair lift.
