Civil Rights Trip to the South

Learn about pivotal moments in America’s struggle for racial equality by exploring key sites on the Civil Rights Trail. Participants will connect the movement to contemporary issues and study the role of Jewish communities.

About the Trip

When is the trip?
It will begin in Atlanta, Georgia on the morning of Monday, February 9 and end on the evening of Wednesday, February 11. Participants must arrive at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport by 10 am on February 9. Participants should plan to leave Atlanta after 7 pm on February 11.
What will we be doing?
We will tour historically significant sites in the civil rights movement in Atlanta, Birmingham, Selma, and Montgomery and learn about pivotal moments in the struggle for racial equality. We will also study the role of Jewish communities in the story, and learn about advocacy through a Jewish lens. In addition, we will visit the Equal Justice Initiative’s National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which is devoted to victims of lynchings, and the Legacy Museum, which explores the evolution of racial oppression from slavery to mass incarceration.

How do I register for the trip?

What is the cost of the trip?

It is $1,825.00 per person for a double room or $2,075.00 per person for a single room.

This cost does not include airfare.

When is final payment due?

It is due upon registration.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations on or before October 24 are fully refundable. Cancellations after October 24 are non-refundable.
Who is our travel partner?

We are partnering with Etgar 36.

Will we be flying together?

We will not be flying as a group. You should plan to meet the group at Atlanta International Airport by 10 am on Monday, February 9.

Which member of the clergy will lead this trip?

Rabbis Koffman and Zauzmer will be leading this trip.

What are accessibility considerations for this trip?

The longest walk is across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. It is a quarter mile long. Our bus will also cross the bridge, and you can ride rather than walk. Most of the other walking is in museums, which have wheelchairs for those who need them. We can accommodate scooters under the bus, and the bus steps kneel. We can also arrange for a bus with a wheelchair lift.
