MAH HADASH

SP RING 2025

Spring is just around the corner, which means the festivals of Purim and Passover are almost upon us! Join us for holiday celebrations and choose from many worship options. If you’re looking for an interesting class or topic to explore, PAS continues to offer a diverse array of classes, lectures, and workshops, so please check our calendar listings. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and congregants can find options for educational programming, strategies for coping with issues in this realm, and support groups.

As spring brings a season of renewal, PAS is proud to participate in an Interfaith Community Art Project - Flock of Peace Birds, a collaboration among Park Avenue Synagogue and three neighborhood churches. Teens from PAS and visitors from Israel helped create the first Flock of Peace Birds, which will be displayed in the PAS lobby in the coming months.

Israeli Independence Day will be celebrated beginning April 30, and the Celebrate Israel Parade follows on May 18. For the first time, PAS will participate with its own float. Teens and young families can enjoy activities all throughout the spring, including a Teen-Parent Mission trip to Israel this June.

The options are limitless.

WORSHIP

Congregants can find the service that best suits their needs, whether they are attending in person or watching from home. At our services, whether on Shabbat; weekday morning and afternoon minyans; or on holidays, worshiping at PAS gives everyone the opportunity to learn from our rabbis, sing with our cantors, comfort mourners, and pray together. On Shabbat, congregants can celebrate along with Bnei Mitzvah, couples who are soon to be married, and at baby namings.

Beyond the Four Cups: Taking a Deeper Dive into Passover

FRI–SAT / MAR 21–22 / RABBI JOSHUA KULP

Explore the deeper meaning behind some of the most well-known seder table traditions and learn new stories about the development of Passover and the Haggadah through Jewish history with our Shabbat scholar, Rabbi Joshua Kulp, senior scholar at the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center.

SESSIONS

The Haggadah and the Founding of the State of Israel

FRI / MAR 21 / 5:00 PM / 87TH ST AND ONLINE

The Haggadah is an ancient text, originating in the second century C.E. For most of Jewish history, the text remained quite stable. But in the early part of the 20th century, Jews began to revise it to make it more meaningful in their lives. We’ll look at Haggadot composed during WWII for Jewish soldiers in the British army, for Israeli soldiers during the 1948 Independence War, and from kibbutzim that helped found Israel in the 1940s and 1950s.

A Game of Hide-and-

Seek:

Hiding Hametz Just to Find It

SAT / MAR 22 / 9:00 AM / 87TH ST AND ONLINE

The Pesach ritual kicks into full gear on the evening beforehand when we hide bread all over the house and then go and look for it with a candle, a feather, and a bowl. But why are we hiding hametz when we just cleaned the house? We will look at the history of this practice and explore customs such as using a flashlight and leaving the lights on during the search.

Starving at the Seder: Why Do We Begin the Seder with Such a Measly Appetizer?

SAT / MAR 22 / 1:00 PM / 87TH ST

Just a few bites of veggies and then two hours of talking? We will look at texts that explain how it came to be that our seder began in such a way. This small issue opens a window into understanding the history of this meal.

FLOCK OF PEACE BIRDS

Tue / Mar 11 / 6:30 pm / 87th St

In response to the events of Oct. 7, the outbreak of war, the corresponding rise in antisemitism, and building on the PAS’s tradition of interfaith concerts, this spring’s community art project will strive to strengthen community ties through dialogue and art making. It is a collaboration among Park Avenue Synagogue, Church of the Heavenly Rest, The Brick Presbyterian Church, and the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola.

The artwork, a flock of birds, will be displayed in Upper East Side houses of worship and “fly” between them. The flock signifies cooperation and aims to instill a sense of awe and shared community.
