Israel at 70: A Week of Celebration

During the week of Yom HaAtzma'ut on Israel’s 70th anniversary, from Monday, April 16 to Sunday, April 22, we invite you to celebrate with music, literature, and political reflections. The week will be filled with exciting events with leading scholars, musicians, and actors – many of whom we at PAS have had the privilege of hearing before.

When we last heard from Bret Stephens at PAS, in 2014, he was writing for the Wall Street Journal. He is now at the New York Times. Together with UJA-Federation of NY, Central Synagogue, and Kehillath Jeshurun, we invite you to join us at Kehillath Jeshurun on Monday, April 16 at 6:00 pm for Israel @ 70: A Conversation with Bret Stephens. He will speak about Israel’s current events and what could be in store for the future.

The next evening, Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 pm, in partnership with AIPAC, we welcome Yossi Klein Halevi back to PAS. On the occasion of Yom HaZikaron, he will speak on The Price of Powerlessness, The Price of Power. Klein Halevi is quoted as saying, “On Holocaust Remembrance Day we mourn the price of powerlessness; on Remembrance Day for the Fallen of Israel’s Wars we mourn the price of power, and on Independence Day we celebrate our improbable resurrection. Taken together, those days offer many Israelis the most tangible experience of fulfilling the injunction of the Passover Haggadah – to feel as though we ourselves left Egypt.” Join us as he expounds upon these ideas.

To celebrate the unifying occasion of the 70th birthday of the State of Israel, our own Cantor Azi Schwartz will perform together with Cantor Chaim Dovid Berson (The Jewish Center) and Cantor Mo Glazman (Temple Emanu-El) in a historic intra-faith concert. Come hear them on Wednesday, April 18 at 7:00 pm at Temple Emanu-El in a concert called Three Jewish Movements, Three Famed Cantors, One Voice.

If mornings work better for you, come to PAS on Friday, April 20, at 9:15 am, when we will welcome back master teacher Rachel Korazim. In a session titled The Other As a Mirror, Rachel will lead us in study of images of Arabs in Jewish Israeli literature and in Arab Israeli literary works, introducing us to poetry by Yehuda Amichai, Sami Michael, and others. If you have never learned with Rachel, you are in for a treat! Another morning session is Window on Israel with Rabbi Zuckerman on Shabbat morning April 21 at 9:00 am. Finally, we end the week of celebration with a bang with a performance of The Band’s Visit on Sunday, April 22 at 3:00 pm.

Don’t wait! Sign up now for one or more of these stimulating offerings in honor of Israel’s milestone birthday.
