Selecting a Date

Bnei Mitzvah Dates

Our date selection process begins in the fall of each year. We assign dates according to birth year, as grades vary from school to school. We draw a list of children from our membership database to ensure all students are included.

Your child must attend our Congregational School or a Jewish day school to celebrate a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Park Avenue Synagogue.

We will send a packet via email to all students in the appropriate year. The packet contains a cover letter with instructions on the date selection process, calendars for the Bnei Mitzvah years and a link to a form for you to fill out. The calendars indicate all the possible Bar/Bat Mitzvah dates for the year, including not only Shabbat mornings and afternoons, but also Jewish holidays, secular holidays, and other possible dates. If a date does not appear on the calendar, it is reserved for another synagogue event. The calendar also notes if dates have some restrictions; for example, on some dates the Lower Level is not available for Kiddush or luncheons.

Available dates include Saturday mornings, Rosh Hodesh Sundays, and Saturday afternoons (for minha services). All students learn to read Torah and Haftarah, lead parts of the service, and give a Dvar Torah, regardless of when they have their ceremony. Due to our growing and thriving community, all dates may be “doubled,” that is, there may be two bnei mitzvah on that Shabbat.

We ask parents to carefully choose three different dates. We will do our best to accommodate your choices.
