Russian Writers: Revolution, Repression, and Renaissance

In each session we will examine the work of a different Jewish writer from Russia or Ukraine, including the poet Hayim Nahman Bialik; the novelist and short story writer Isaac Babel; Hava Shapiro, the first modern Hebrew female short story writer and an important Hebrew feminist foremother; and Yokheved Bat Miriam, one of the first Hebrew women poets and a member of the Hebrew Octoberists. Travelers on next fall’s journey to Russia are especially encouraged to join this class.

Dr. Wendy Zierler is a Professor of Modern Jewish Literature and Feminist Studies at HUC-JIR, and a regular teacher of our PAS summer classes.
