Fast of Gedaliah

October 2, 2019 (All day)

The Fast of Gedaliah is one of the four "minor" fasts, observed from just before dawn until nightfall. It commemorates the assassination of Gedaliah ben Ahikam, whom the Babylonians appointed as governor of Judah after the capture of Jerusalem in 586 BCE. The instigators of Gedaliah's murder apparently hoped to overthrow Babylonian rule.

The morning service on Tzom Gedaliah includes the Torah reading for a public fast day, Exodus 32:11-14 and 34:1-10.
