BRINGING THEIR VOICES TO LIGHT
Women in Yiddish Literature
Tue / Dec 6 / 7:00 pm / 87th Street And Online
Anita Norich and Rabbi Cosgrove
Where are all the women in Yiddish literature? Anita Norich, well-known scholar and translator of Yiddish literature will discuss the role of women writers in Yiddish: what and how they wrote, why we know more about their poetry than their novels, and why there has been a renewal of interest in them. She will also discuss the importance of translating these works, and how modern translation has led to a renaissance and rediscovery of some forgotten--or suppressed--treasures.
Anita Norich is Collegiate Professor Emerita of English and Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan. She is the translator of Fear and Other Stories by Chana Blankshteyn (2022), A Jewish Refugee in New York by Kadya Molodovsky (2019), and the forthcoming Two Feelings by Tsilye Dropkin. She is also the author of Writing in Tongues: Yiddish Translation in the 20th Century; Discovering Exile: Yiddish and Jewish American Literature in America During the Holocaust; The Homeless Imagination in the Fiction of Israel Joshua Singer. She translates Yiddish literature and lectures and publishes on a range of topics concerning modern Jewish cultures, Yiddish language and literature, Jewish American literature, and Holocaust literature.
This program is presented in partnership with the Women’s Network.
