PAS Graduate Course
New York Jews and "the City"
Wed / Begins Feb 24 / 7:00 pm
Dr. David E. Kaufman
What makes New York a “Jewish city”? Beyond the simply demographic answer, this course will explore how the Jews of New York City have engaged with their urban environment and contributed to the city’s culture and economy, establishing New York as the modern Jewish city par excellence. We’ll survey the Jewish role in New York’s commerce, ethnic community, the clothing and real estate industries, the labor movement, popular culture, public education, and government – all areas in which the Jewish contribution was definitive and determinative, together helping to turn New York into what one well-known New York Jew (Harry Golden) once called “the greatest Jewish city in the world.” This class is part of a series on the New York Jewish experience. Prior classes have focused on the synagogues of NYC and New York Jews and the making of popular culture.
