Israelite Prophecy in the Bible
Wed / Begins Oct 14 / 7:00 pm
Dr. Ed Silver
What is biblical prophecy and where did the Israelite practice of experiencing prophetic visions come from? When and how did Jews begin looking to the Torah instead of prophets’ individual experiences as the vehicle for divine revelation?
This class will investigate prophecy, prophetic behavior, and prophetic texts in ancient Israel. In this class, you can explore the development of uniquely Israelite forms of prophecy from earlier, ancient Near Eastern roots. We’ll also survey the range of prophetic literature in the Tanakh, both poetic and narrative. As we progress, we will observe the emergence of written prophecy from its oral tradition and track the development of prophecy into forms of apocalyptic eschatology (theology concerning death) and messianism.
