Social Action Activities

PAS Food Pantry

Wednesdays (3:00 - 5:00 pm) and Fridays (3:30 - 5:00 pm)
With loving support from the synagogue community, this entirely student-run operation provides food for more than 250 struggling families every week.  Students meet on Wednesdays to pack bags, and then return on Fridays to distribute the food to families and individuals from all over the upper-Manhattan community.  The Food Pantry program is open to volunteers starting in grades 6 and 7.  Come and be a part of a wonderful, rewarding, and really fun tradition!

Bikur Cholim

Bikur Cholim is a group of congregants that lend support to members of our PAS community that are sick or homebound.  Every week, High School students will have the chance to augment these efforts.  Whether it’s blowing Shofar during the High Holidays for those who cannot come to shul, or simply dropping by to wish our elderly friends a happy birthday, this project will create significant memories for both young and old.

Monthly Projects

Living in a city like NYC, there are many things we can do to make our world a better place.  We’ll choose projects every month that broaden our approach to social justice, sometimes taking us away from our conventional understanding of what it means to help.  Working with organizations like DOROT, Project Ezra, and Midnight Run, we’re definitely going to make a difference!

UJA Programs For Middle/High School Students:

Community Service Hours for Students
Do your middle or high school students have community service hours to complete during this school year? There are many ways for students to volunteer their time at UJA-Federation agencies throughout the city. Volunteer opportunities can be one-time or ongoing depending on your child’s interests and school requirements. To learn more, please contact Bruce Weiser at UJA-Federation at 212-836-1844 or weiserb@ujafedny.org.

Give a Mitzvah-Do a Mitzvah for Bar/Bat Mitzvah Students
