Screening the Holocaust

Mondays beginning October 17

This course will examine different cinematic portrayals of the Holocaust, analyzing both the qualities and shortcomings of films such as Shoah, Schindler’s List, The Pianist, and others.  Weekly sessions will include both full-length film screenings and discussions.  Parental permission is required for viewing of various R-rated films.

High School Rock Band

Tuesdays beginning October 11

At PAS, we’re putting a fresh spin on traditional songs and melodies, and rocking out to the tunes of popular Jewish Jewish musicians like Rich Recht, and Josh Nelson.  Our High School rock band will train to perform at large synagogue events like the Purim Spiel and the Congregational School Zimriyah.  Space is limited so sign up fast!

Step Up for Israel

Four Thursdays - October 27, November 17, December 15, January 5

Anchored by an opening presentation by Professor Alan Dershowitz, this course will set the scene for an ongoing conversation about the portrayal of Israel in worldwide media as well as on college and high school campuses.  Learn about both sides of the various arguments, and build up your confidence to defend Israel amidst mounting pressure and negative rhetoric.

The Unread Passages of Talmud: Jesus, Sex, and Crude Humor

This course will evaluate some of the more racy topics in Talmudic text. Through interactive discussions, we will try to understand the context of these writings within the greater framework of Rabbinic Judaism.
