Preparation for a child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration is a process that extends over several years. In truth, every part of a child’s Jewish education is preparation for Bar/Bat Mitzvah – from the family’s first Shabbat dinner with a new baby to participation in Young Family services and events to Passover seder meals to enrollment in Congregational School or day school to a Congregational trip to Israel. Families are given the date of their child’s Shabbat celebration when the child is in 4th grade. Focus on the Bar or Bat Mitzvah service begins in earnest one year later, when the child is about to finish 5th grade and parents participate in an orientation meeting with clergy, educators, and administrators to learn all the steps and arrangements that are involved in preparing for this milestone.
A Bar or Bat Mitzvah is indeed a milestone, not a finish line. Learners are expected to continue attending Congregational School after their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration and to enroll in the Rabbi Judah Nadich High School to continue their Jewish education.
The requirements and preparation for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Park Avenue Synagogue are described in detail in the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Handbook. Parents receive a copy at the orientation meeting when their learners are in 5th grade.
