SHABBAT SHALOM, FROM CHAIRMAN MARK FIRST & PRESIDENT LIZZY MARKUS
This week’s Torah portion, Emor, speaks of the observance and celebration of certain holidays, including Shabbat, Passover, Shavuot, Sukkot, Yom Kippur, and Rosh Hashanah. These holidays are to be celebrated in community, connecting with God and with one another. At this time of year, we at PAS celebrate something special – our community.
We thank those lay leaders who have served our congregation and elect leaders for the future. We celebrate the honoree at our annual Gala. We remember those who are no longer with us and welcome those born during the year. It is this demarcation of time, like the passing of the holidays, that makes us think about the year gone by and the year ahead. As leaders of this community, and with Parashat Emor as our guide, we think about the kind of community that we are, as well as the community that we aspire to be.
We are to be bound together as a community, with deep and meaningful connections to our spiritual leaders as well as each other – each with a responsibility for our public space and for defining the character of our community. We have an obligation to care for those around us, including those who are less fortunate, and different, than we are.
“When you reap the harvest of the land, do not reap to the very edges of your field . . . leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you.” (Leviticus 23:22) We should treat each other with kindness and respect. The parashah is titled Emor, meaning to speak in a softer, kinder, and gentler way of speaking than the word daber, which also means to speak but more commanding and emphatically.
Thank you for making PAS the Kehillah Kedosha – the sacred community – that it is.
Shabbat Shalom,
Chairman Mark First and President Lizzy Markus
